The Ultimate Moving House Checklist

Moving Checklist

Are you preparing to move house?

Firstly you will need to choose and research a reputable removalist company with professional staff and experience in your required location. It is important to discuss your budget and time frame for your house move and ensure confirmation is received in writing. It can also be beneficial to enquire about freight insurance.

It is also necessary to research and organise home insurance and home and contents for your new home prior to you moving in. To ensure a smooth house relocation; it is helpful to make lists of any large or precious items and ensure these items are included in your removalists budget. Lists also make your move run smoothly by categorising your items along side the required rooms.

Decide if you will be packing your goods or if you want someone to pack them for you and the same for unpacking; will you do the unpacking or will you want the removalist to unpack your goods also?

Enquiring about new locks / keys and security for your property is also important to complete.

What is your moving checklist?

  • Once you have chosen your removal company and have locked in a removal date there are some items you will need to check off to ensure your move runs to plan.
  • You will need to make contact with your new electoral role so you can transfer your details for your new address.
  • You will need to ensure you have home contents and house insurance for your new property.
  • Make a list of all large and precious items and make note of their condition to ensure their safe travels during your move.
  • Dispose of any items you no longer need via a charity store / market or hard rubbish collections.

Tips to pack

Once you have received your boxes for your move, you will also need labels, a marker pen, bubble wrap and butchers paper. All boxes need to be labelled with their contents and required rooms; this will assist your unpacking process.

It is important to put the smaller heavier items in smaller boxes and the lighter items in the larger boxes.

Delicate items will need to be bubble wrapped and labelled as fragile, to ensure they are safely moved. Don't forget to ensure your fridge/freezer is turned off prior to moving day and transport any frozen goods in an esky on moving day.

Notify your removalist of the big bulky items such as BBQs / Bikes outdoor furniture / Trampolines and Outdoor play equipment. It can be beneficial to un-assemble bulky items prior to moving day. Ensure your removalist is extra aware and careful of fragile items such as pianos or large mirrors and paintings.

Don't forget to check garden sheds and organise transport of garden tools and bikes with your removalists.

Changing postal address

It is important you change your address for all of your utility companies to ensure water and electricity is connected at your new house address. You should do this at least one month before a move to make sure you can get necessary services turned on in time. On moving day you will also need to organise a locksmith to change over your new locks.

Power and Internet

Once you address has been advised and updated to your power / internet and other utilities, this will make your moving day smooth allowing you to enjoy the comfort of your new home.
